We have a couple of upcoming events at the Da Kų Cultural Centre. On April 17 & 18 – All First Nation women are invited to a workshop called “Reclaiming Our Space: How to get crystal clear on your message and purpose and amplify your voice in this world.” The message for event: “As Women of Colour, it is time to reclaim, stand your ground and take your rightful and equitable space in the spotlight. It is your time. And the time is now.” This course is ideal if you:
The facilitator, Sonali Fiske, is an amazing women from Los Angeles and who has been supporting women throughout the world to find their voice and create clear direction on their life path. There is no fee, however participants will need to cover their own travel and accommodations. Snacks and lunch will be served each day. We will have the CAFN Bus pick people up from Takhini everyday and bring them back and forth. You must pre-register with Nataschaa Chetterton at (867) 335-4460 or Jocelyn Kinney at (867) 634-4200, ext # 214. --- Champagne and Aishihik First Nations AnDa Ta Youth Centre and Ta'an Kwäch'än Council are hosting the “Working Together for our Youth Gathering” at Da Kų Cultural Centre in Dakwakada (Haines Junction) on April 27-28. The gathering begins for youth aged 8-12 years old at 1:30 pm with Suzette Amaya who will be speaking about cyber bullying and building self-confidence. At 4:00 pm students will learn with Dani & Lizzy who are going to speak about artistic expression and graffiti art. At 5:30 pm there will be a community dinner followed by a mini hand games tournament. The gathering on Saturday is for youth 13 years and older. Saturday begins with Suzette Amaya leading a goal setting working shop and a conversation about lateral violence, suicide prevention, life promotion and sober living. Dani & Lizzy will be there talking about artistic expression through graffiti art. The event will conclude that evening with a video dance party and a Dani & Lizzy concert. Suzette Amaya is an inspiring Cree, Nisga, Coast Salish woman who holds many roles within the Vancouver community. She radio producer/entertainer and a support worker with the Bloom Group Community Service Society working with Women and Children in the Downtown Eastside. She is really passionate about helping youth through addictions, MCFD issues, homelessness, abuse and schooling. She also often recognized for her work on reality TV shows: Big Brother Canada Season One, Back in the Day: On the Might Fraser and as the winner of Sequester 5.0! Dani and Lizzy are twins from Vancouver who rocketed to fame in 2013 when their song Dancing in the Sky became a viral hit. As successful recording artists, their passion for art and music is inspiring with the message: Amazing things happen when you open your heart. This Gathering is open to all youth. The Fiddleheads are coming out from Whitehorse for workshops with the Treble Makers, a school performance, a community music jam and potluck and a barn dance. Ski Report For those looking to get in a few more great skis before the season comes to an end, Pine Lake has been track set and is just spectacular at this time of year. Swisshhh!! Hockey Haines Junction Minor Hockey wrapped-up their hockey season last month, with some fun adult vs. kids games and a pizza party hosted by rink attendants Rob and Steve. What a great way to end an amazing season! Last week they held their end of the Season Banquet and Awards. They celebrated their fun and successful hockey season, recognized their young athletes and their achievements and gave thanks to their wonderful coaches, parents, volunteers and supporters. It was a wonderful and well-attended event. Congratulations to all the awards recipients, and thank you to everyone who took part in the evening celebration! A big thank you to all coaches and volunteers for all their hard work. HJMHA really appreciates all the time and effort you donate to the organization. Without your continued support their couldn’t make all the practices, tournaments and fundraisers happen! Thank you! Wellness APRIL IS CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Our monthly health information board provides information about simple lifestyle changes that help prevent cancer, warning signs of cancer, and resources for support when dealing with cancer. You can help prevent cancer by making healthy life choices like quitting smoking, reducing your alcohol consumption, and eating lots of fruits and vegetables. One of the best ways to beat cancer is to detect it early. There are many simple cancer screening tests available at the clinic — please call to make an appointment today. COMMUNITY WELLNESS CLINICS You can see a nurse for a check-up any time an appointment is available! Anyone can come in for a full health assessment at any time. We can make sure you are up-to-date on routine tests and refer you to the local visiting doctors to address any concerns that arise. Let us know how we can help you meet your health goals. The nursing station can be reached at 634-4444 Daffodil Campaign! We haven’t done our final tally yet, but I think we’ll have net proceeds at around $26,000 this year. We had around $12,000 in expenses and sales, sponsors and donations are coming in at around $38,000 so far. Today, Tuesday, April 10, is the last day to purchase daffodils in support of the Canadian Cancer Society and the Jean C Barber Lodge. We will have volunteers at Wyke’s Independent Grocery Store from around noon to 6pm today. A huge thank you to everyone who made this year’s campaign so successful.

Haines Junction Community Report CBC – March 13, 2018
This past weekend… In Whitehorse, this past weekend, Junior Canadian Rangers from across the Yukon competed in a marksmanship competition… and Haines Junction came out in top place! So this means that Team Haines Junction will represent our community and the Yukon Territory at the National JCR Marksmanship competition to be held in St. Catherine's, ON on May 5 - 6, 2018. Individual Awards:
Our community is super proud of our team and wish them luck in May! I also hear that our HJ Soccer Team did really well at the tournament in Whitehorse this past weekend. A big congratulations to our athletes! Leadership Our community was also very proud to host the BYTE Leadership Conference at the St. Elias Convention Centre this weekend. It was amazing to see these brilliant young leaders learning together. Upcoming Events Okay, so last time, I told Tara that the headliner for the Augusto Children’s Festival is the fabulous magician Sheldon Casavant. And this month I get to announce that Ventriloquist Kellie Haines will be joining us from Vancouver with a few of her friends to put on a show on Saturday night and to give us two workshops in puppet-making and beginner ventriloquism! Augusto is Yukon's only dedicated art & music festival for children – August 10-12, 2018. Augusto will be announcing more performers and artists over the coming months, follow the festival on Facebook or visit www.augustokids.ca Yukon College Spring Break CodeMakers Youth Camp at Yukon College. Are you interested in playing with cutting-edge technology? Do you wonder what programs and components make your favourite toys and devices work? Do you want to know more about how technology can solve real-world problems? At CodeMakers Camps you will learn the basics of computer coding, robotics, and innovations for the future. You will experience exciting gadgets and programs that can solve mazes, play games and help people in the communities and around the world. This camp is for Kids in grades 3-6. Advanced Wilderness and Remote First Aid and CPR-C (40 hour course) – This course is being held at the HJ Campus from April 9-13. Deadline to register is March 29 and the cost is $495. Ski Report The SilverSled Sled Dog Race happened last weekend and the trail is amazing for snowshoeing or skiing. It’s a great place for a weekend ski for those who are looking to escape the city. A big thank you to the volunteer trail groomers who have been doing a wonderful job setting tracks at the Forestry Trails for all of us happy skiers! Hockey January and February are busy hockey months for the Haines Junction Huskies' teams. Haines Junction hosted of the 2018 ATOM Championships on the weekend of Jan 12-14. Our Atom players coached by Ryan Drummond and Ryan Hack were great hosts of the tournament; they worked hard, played well and represented our little town well. A big thank you to the coaches, the volunteers, the rink attendants and tournament sponsors - it was a super successful weekend because of everyone involved. The Bantam Hockey Championships were held in Whitehorse on January 26-28. Congratulations to all our Bantam and Midget players and their coach Ernie MacKinnon and Ryan MacKinnon for participating! They played well and represented HJ well. The Novice Hockey Championships were held in Watson Lake on February 2-4. Despite having a team of only 8 players including a goalie who had only been playing net for two weeks, three players who had only put on hockey skates a year ago and a 7hr drive in -40. The Haines Junction Huskies Novice team coached by TJ Grantham and Meagan Brown brought home the bronze medal with a 4-1 record. Way to go HUSKIES! We are so proud of all our players! Haines Junction Minor Hockey Association would like to thank all the coaches, volunteers, parents and players for another great hockey season!!! PomPom Challenge Did you know that we’re in the midst of a community-wide challenge to make 500 hand sewn wolf fur pompoms? With fur supplied from local trappers, we’re making wolf fur pompoms for Team Yukon’s toques for the 2018 Arctic Winter Games! They look amazing! It has been a great project for the community. We’ve all been getting together and having little sewing parties and learning a new skill. The next workshop to learn how to make the pompoms is on Monday, February 19 from 7-9pm at Da Ku and then on Tuesday, February 20 from 7-9pm at the Youth Centre. Questions? The Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival is now well into its second decade, attracting international audiences and world-class performers to Haines Junction. It is called ‘Unframed’ and is new work combining linocut prints with pencil and paint. Good Morning! Sandi – I thought I wasn’t going to have a very long report for you this morning… I thought, first week back, it will be slow. Well, I was wrong. So let’s dive right in! Sports Report Minor Hockey has had a busy and successful first few months… and there is a certainly a buzz around town as we look forward to hosting the ATOM Yukon Championships this weekend. Come on out to Arena and cheer on all our Yukon youth -- but be sure to cheer extra loud cheer for the Haines Junction HUSKIES!!!!! Haines Junction Minor Hockey would like for me to congratulate their November Volunteer of the Month: Dakota Jackson! We’ve heard that he has demonstrated a high level of commitment to being prepared for every practice and skills camp, as well as assisting the young beginner skaters in the Mites/Tykes group. Dakota is setting a great example of dedication for his hockey peers. Val Drummond tells me that the Women's Hockey Jamboree will take place the last weekend in January this year. Contact her for details. And still on the ice… The Shawkwunlee Dunena Sports Society is hosting the 36th Annual Native Curling Bonspiel at the St. Elias Center and Arena on February 2-4. Register by January 30. It’s $240 per team contact 634-7074 or 634-5260. There will be a Saturday night banquet and dance. And for those less competitive curlers, The St Elias Lions are hosting a fun curling Bonspiel – a “fun-speil” -- on Saturday, February 17. The 49th annual Alcan 200 snowmobile race is happening on Saturday, January 20th. The Haines road is officially closed for the day. Come on out to Dezadeash and watch as the snowmobiles come in at 11 am Yukon time. The St. Elias Ski Club is holding its annual AGM on Thursday, January 18 at 7:00 pm in the school library. We’re still hoping for snow out here… although I hear the club has started to lay some tracks at the Forestry Trails. Badminton has started up again and it is on Monday nights from 7:30 - 9 pm at the school. For information – call Mark at 634-2943 Adult soccer is every Thursday from 7:30-9pm in the school gym. Yoga is on Monday nights at 5:15 pm at Haines Junction Campus with Marguerite Richard. Lia Fox is teaching a yoga Stretch and Tone class tonight at 5:15 pm and its also the college. Arts and Culture Da Ku will be hosting Jeneen Frei Njootli – February 1, at 7pm for a visual performance and screening of her film Being Skidoo, pre-empting the Available Light film Festival in Whitehorse -- this event is hosted by the Yukon Film Society. Junction Arts and Music invites you to Escape the Winter with "La Belle Vie en Hiver", an evening with cheese, wine and music in the atrium of the St. Elias Convention Centre. A tasting of excellent wines will accompany fine cheese, served with artisan baguettes from 14 Acre Farm. Enjoy decadence along with tri-lingual Yukon music from Driftwood Holly and Brigitte Desjardins. This will be held in the Senior’s Centre social room at 3:00 pm – the event starts with about an hour of shuffleboard and pool. Their regularly weekly schedule is as follows:
The Seniors also host guest speakers and take on great community projects. I think its pretty fair to say that Haines Junction is a great place to live and retire! Economic Development The St. Elias Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual AGM on Thursday, January 11th at 7pm in council chambers. Angie Charlebois invites community members to try out Havening which a method for healing from chronic pain, anxiety, depression and fatigue. Join her for a free 30 minute session on Mondays from 12:15 to 12:45 pm at the Haines Junction Campus of Yukon College Adventure! And last but not least, I’ve learned that Lonnie Dupre and Pascal Marceau are Canadians who are attempting the first winter ascent of Mount Lucania. Nestled deep in the Yukon’s Kluane National Park, this seldom visited peak has never been climbed in the winter. The two person team, Marceau and Dupre, will attempt to be the first to do so. Marceau would be one of few or possibly the first ever female, if successful, to summit a subarctic, high altitude mountain in the winter. Haines Junction Community Report CBC – December 11, 2017 Good Morning! From beautiful Dakwakada-Haines Junction! Wow – what a week! This crazy warm weather has had us all slipping and sliding all over the place. We’ve had a number of road closures that have left people stranded in town here or in Haines and a few people got stuck in Burwash last week when out for Bingo. Luckily, for those who found themselves with an extended stay here in Haines Junction, we had an incredible Mountain Festival on this weekend. We had a couple hundred people attend the mountain festival and big well deserved thank you to the presenters, organizers and venue staff for their exceptional hospitality. The hockey season in Haines Junction is in full swing. The Minor Hockey Program here runs 4 days a week (Mon-Thurs) with occasional games and clinics on the weekends. We currently have over 65 registered players, an active 8 member board, and a long list of volunteers (including 12 coaches) who help make our program successful. Haines Junction Minor Hockey would like to thank all their volunteers, the village of Haines Junction staff, as well as Lotteries Yukon's and Dakwakada Capital Investments for their ongoing support. Minor Hockey is also looking forward to hosting the ATOM Yukon Championships from January 12-14 at our incredible arena here in HJ. And speaking of sports – Haines Junction has some exceptional soccer players. Our youth were in Whitehorse this weekend for a soccer tournament and its sounds like everyone had an absolute blast. Upcoming for soccer, and for those who like to plan way in advance, there will be a Futsal Fun Tournament on Sunday, March 19th at St. Elias School Gym for kids aged 8 to 14 from 10am to 4pm. 20 girls are coming out from Whitehorse so far and we have 30 kids from Haines Junction. The Church of St.Christopher - the log church on the Alaska Highway in Haines Junction - will be hosting their annual Christmas Carol service at 7 pm on Sunday, December 17. The service will get people in the Christmas spirit with familiar carols and readings. But the big news is that there will be live musicians and singers, including the international singing sensations the Squirrel Camp Sopranos! For more information about the carol service at 7 pm on Sunday, please call Mark Ritchie at 634-2943 Also at the church, the community Thrift Shop is open from 2-6pm on Thursday, Dec 14, 2017 We have a couple upcoming holiday open houses: CAFN – December 14 from noon to 2pm at the Main Admin Building RCMP Open House – December 15 in the morning Village of Haines Junction Open House is on– Friday starts at 4pm Community Nursing Open House – Thursday, Dec 21 – 1:30-3:30pm Another delicious way to get into the holiday spirit… CAFN is hosting a Gingerbread House decorating contest – meet at the Home Ec Room at 3pm on Monday, Dec 18 at the St. Elias Community School. The Annual Christmas Hamper Community Donation drive is now underway. Donation jars are available at the “Little Green Apple”, “Top Spot”, and “1016 pub”. There are also donation bins for non-perishable food items there is a bin at the Little Green Apple and Top Spot. Hamper delivery is scheduled for December 15th this year. This year’s categories: Griswold Award: Spectacular light, motion or music Charlie Brown Award: Simply Decorated but full of Christmas cheer Nostalgia Award: Traditional Decorations for Holidays past, reminding people of their childhood Children & Youth Categories: Frosty the Snowman Award: Creative front yard snow creation Snoopy Award: Decorate something other than your home Inside-Out: Indoor displays that can be seen from the road And the finish off the holiday season, CAFN Da Ku will be hosting a Family New Years Eve with activities December 31, 7pm-12am Trails! The Village of Haines Junction is facilitating a community conversation and planning exercise around local trails – how people use them, which ones are most important, and how to maximize the benefits they bring to everyone. The project will wrap up this Spring. The idea of mapping, sharing, and planning trails for both residents and visitors has been discussed in Haines Junction for many years. This phase of trail planning comes to us by way of the 2015 Recreation Implementation Plan which asked the Village of Haines Junction to create an interconnected trail network – connecting residences and neighbours and people to the places that matter most. The planning team will be working to gather input from Haines Junction residents and community groups involved with trail recreation in a variety of ways – including meetings, online surveys, and public events - from November 2017 to January 2018. We are just wrapping up the initial phase to determine what people see as key opportunities and issues, and understand what the planning team should consider when designing a meaningful engagement process in the New Year.
