👋 Introduction

👉Weather: Chįch’a Ńtsi nits’i

👉You know the arena season is coming to an end when the Broomball Tournament happens in Haines Junction. The Ice is now off the rink at the HJ arena. A huge thank you to the fabulous arena staff for another great season and to all of the volunteers who host great sports and events at all season long.

👉This has been a really fun report to put together with so many accomplishments and awards to highlight (and I have likely missed many):

👉St Elias Community School cleaned-up at the Yukon STEM Expo (science fair) in Whitehorse this year.
Len Oborne - “Looking FUR an Answer” - Grade 4 First Place, BC Nature Award, YFNED Award
Iris Falls - “Stalactites and Stalagmites” - Grade 4 Second Place, Julia Lang Award
Grace Anderson - “Back in Time 65 Millions Years Ago” - Grade 5 First Place
Barrett MacKinnon - “Optimum Flex” - Grade 5 Second Place
Ava Dyce - “Follow me & walk the tracks of the Porcupine Caribou” - Grade 5 Third Place, BC Nature Award, YFNED Award
Benji Kinna - “Magnets and Magnetic Fields” - Engineers Yukon Award

👉Congratulations to Dawson Drummond for winning this year’s competition for the Snowboard Yukon Championships logo design as well as medaling in slop style and banked slalom this weekend.

👉Congratulations to Jasmine and Ella who are on the U15 Yukon Wild team for their victory at the Richmond Ice Classic at the end of March!

👉Congratulations to Diane Strand, who was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal last weekend for her commitment to community and her practice of assisting those with anxiety and trauma. Diane joins three other Junctioners, Ranger Sergeant Wade Istchenko - MLA for Kluane and Master Corporal Marcel Dulac who were presented King Charles III Coronation Medals by Senator Pat Duncan - Yukon in Haines Junction in January. Wade is the Patrol Commander for the Haines Junction Ranger Patrol, while Marcel runs the Junior Ranger program. Kari Johnston was awarded the medal for dedication to social impact and community resilience.

👉Congratulations to Chuck Hume, Mats'äsäna Mą Primozic, and Justin Johnson
They were recognized for the Youth, Elder, and Educator Awards at the Spark25-Yukon Youth Summit.
The awards recognize the positive contributions of community members in the Yukon.
Mats'äsäna Mą Primozic won for the Educator Award
Justin Johnson won the Youth Leader award
Chuck Hume won the Elders Award

👉Easter is coming up this weekend and we’ve all started to look forward to the week before and Auriol Chocolate’s legendary Easter Egg Hunt. Chocolatier Jesse hides eggs all over town – 45 this year – with treats and goodies from local businesses. To help us find some of the trickier ones, she drops riddles on Facebook to help aid our search. A big thank you to Jesse for starting such a delightful event in town.

👋Thrift Store
The Haines Junction Thrift Shop is open every Thursday from 2 - 6 PM and is held in the basement of the Log Church.  The volunteers that work here add new items to the racks and shelves on a weekly basis.  Prices are kept as low as possible and a free section has been added.
The volunteer workers thank everyone for their ongoing donations, but at the present time we are unable to accept more donations.   We are working hard to get the donations we presently have sorted and out onto the racks and shelves, but there is only so much room in our little shop.
When we can accept donations again, we would like to remind everyone that we can only accept the following items:
  • clothing and household textiles that are clean and in good condition (no torn, stained, stretched out items please)
  • Small household items and toys that are in good condition.
  • Books except for textbooks and manuals
We would like to remind everyone that old, worn-out textile items can be recycled in the textile section of our local recycling centre, please do not bring these items to the Thrift Shop.

The Haines Junction Thrift Shop is happy to be able to provide a place for people to obtain used clothing and other second-hand items . Working together we can keep useful items out of the landfill for as long as possible.

    About

On the 2nd Thursday of each month, the CBC Community Reporter for Dakwäkäda-Haines Junction (Kari Johnston) speaks on CBC morning radio show at around 8:20 am. Tune in at 103.5 FM.

    +++ Kari's Note +++
These transcripts are not verbatim of what was said on the radio. These notes are prepared in advance of the interview. Due to time, and how I am prompted by the host, not everything is read on air.

Where do I get the content?

Most of the content is written by other community members. I just edit it a bit and try to make it flow. I do seek out some content myself, and I often refer to the Happenings of Haines Junction Facebook Page.

I try to email community event organizers a few days in advance to get the content. If you would like to be on that email list, please use the contact me below.
