Conditions did not allow for the full unit to burn. As part of their commitment to forest health and active forest management in KNPR Parks Canada will attempt another prescribed fire at Alder Creek between August 28 and September 10. This fire unit sits along the Mush Lake Road approximately 5.5 km from the Haines Road. Any prescribed fire will depend on precise weather conditions and the completion of a detailed GO/No GO checklist. IF a prescribed fire occurs: access to the Mush Lake Road will be disrupted, a section of the Cottonwood Trail will be closed, there will be increased traffic and activity in the area, and smoke may be visible from the Haines Road and in nearby communities. Prescribed fire can promote and nurture healthy ecosystems and is a tool used for wildfire risk reduction. Safety is Parks Canada’s top priority. A prescribed fire would only be ignited if conditions are optimal. For more details on last years operation and forest health in general visit the Kluane National Park and Reserve website. A few events left for Parks Canada this summer: 👉 Campfire Talks Gather around the fire and hear about Kluane’s history, wildlife, and ever-changing ecosystems. Please bring your own mug to enjoy some complimentary tea and hot chocolate under the Yukon sky. Time: Thursday to Saturday from 7 pm - 8 pm Location: Kathleen Lake Campground Last campfire talks Thursday Aug 21, Fri Aug 22, Sat Aug 23 and Sunday Aug 24!! 👉 Northern Nights Festival: September 19 - 20 Celebrate the return of the night sky at Mät’àtäna Män (Kathleen Lake) with Parks Canada, the Yukon Astronomical Society, and many other partners. 👋Sports, Health and Fitness 👉The Haines Junction Minor Hockey Association's Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the arena mezzanine, followed by a regular meeting.
