CBC Radio Community Report for September 11, 2025
This is the September 11, 2025 CBC Yukon morning radio community report for Dakwakada-Haines Junction. The report is also published to volunteerhainesjunction.com and to the Echo (when possible.) -- 👋 Introduction 👉Weather: K’ùk kulį- it is cloudy 👉 School is back in – a huge thank you to the team at St Elias Community School for a great first week back. 👉Last day for the Village Bakery is September 15 👉Pedal Junction is pleased to announce that they have completed Phase 1 of the construction of the new Bike Skills Park. Entry is off of Willow Acres Road, just down from the water tower. The beginner green and light blue loops are done. Next year, we can look forward to the completion of the pump track, picnic area and strider-bike trails. It has been great to see so many local youth using it. Congratulations to all of the volunteers who helped make it happen! Pedal Junction is seeking donations of old rakes and shovels to help maintain the park. If you have one to donate, please drop them a line at [email protected]. NOTE: Ila and Indy are hosting a lemonade stand fundraiser for the new park, this Sunday, September 14 from noon to 1:30pm. 👉Sha Shaw Corporation and the Ts’u Ghay (Spruce Roots) Collective are building a new sewing studio. The modular building arrived earlier this week and is a great new addition to the town (it’s right across the street from Frostys). It’s exciting to see a new business emerging in our community that is youth-driven. 👋Champagne and Aishihik First Nations 👉Äshäw (Elders) Camp Kluksku Calling All CAFN Elders! Join us at Klukshu for a week of tradition, connection, and community. We'll be cutting and drying salmon in the smokehouse Enjoy cultural activities and storytelling. This includes FireSmart treatments and clearing around the runway area. The work is expected to start on September 14th 2025 and continue until December 2026. Residents can expect to see increased presence of heavy equipment in the area during this time. Working hours are reduced to 8AM to 7PM to mitigate noise disturbance. 👉Council of the Village of Haines Junction has released its Strategic Plan. The Thrift Shop, located in the basement of the Log Church, will be open every Thursday from 2-6 pm. The prices remain the same as last season with adult items starting at $2 and children items starting at $1. Remember to bring cash, as the Thrift Shop is unable to accept other forms of payment, and a reuseable bag or two is also handy as there are many great items waiting for you to find. Shopping second hand is the perfect way to save money and keep items out of the landfill. The volunteer staff look forward to seeing you there! 👋Kluane Hot Rides Club 👉Show and Shine is on Saturday, September 13th from 11am to 2pm. Registration for best in show is $10. 195 Alaska Highway (same lot as the Adventure Time e-bike rentals). Drinks and snacks available on site. 👋Birding with Julie! 👉There is a Yukon Bird Club walk on Saturday Sept 20. Location is on Rainbow street but people can park near the Convention centre and walk over. Julie and Terry will wait on the corner of Rainbow and Karmen streets. Time is 1100 hrs and will be 2 hrs. This area is known for rarities but can also be quiet. 👋 Junction Arts and Music 👉Mark your Mondays for this fun event! There's a jam/open stage gathering starting on September 1st @ 6 - 10 pm at the Convention Center. Adults only – 18+. No drugs, alcohol or vaping. See you there! 👉Disco fever is back! Come dance the night away at the Disco Dance Party, with the Major Funk Orchestra! October 4 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm The Yukon’s long running dance party experts, Major Funk, have assembled an all-star team of musicians and dancers to bring you an unforgettable night of DISCO dance music. Stay tuned for a gear swap – we'll have more details coming soon. There will be a Power Skating Clinic and Hockey Skills Camp on Saturday, October 25th. This event is FREE to all Registered Haines Junction Minor Hockey Players, thanks to the support of Hockey Yukon.
