Around Town
Haines Junction Food Association
  • October 9 was food hamper delivery day in Haines Junction. Volunteers unloaded 142 Hampers. We sent about 50 of those up the highway stopping in Burwash and Beaver Creek and the rest serve from Dezeadeash to Takhini to Bear Creek.
  • The program operates a bit differently in each community. Here in HJ we have dry goods hampers with a package or two of frozen meat. We also stock mini-caches at convenient places around town where people can pick up a bit of food to help them through at the Library, Mental Wellness and Substance Use Hub Office, Haines Junction Health Center, RCMP Detachment, St Elias Community School and CAFN's Community Wellness.
  • The HJ Food Hamper Program is in partnership with the Whitehorse Food Bank and we want to express our deep gratitude to funds we've accessed this year through the the National Food Bank: Northern Capacity Fund and the Access Grant.
  • The Food Bank Society of the Yukon is serving about 2000 people per month in the territory and over half of those recipients are living in Yukon Communities. The Food Bank Society of Yukon are preparing about 330 hampers per month for rural Yukon, plus pantry restocks for mini-caches. They are supporting households in Kluane region, Carmacks, Atlin, Watson Lake, and Faro.
  • The HJ Food Association was able to purchase turkeys and hams for Thanksgiving this weekend, so they went out with the hampers yesterday.
  • And we still have a few turkeys left, please reach out to [email protected] if you'd like one.
  • If you'd like to make a donation to help out our program at CanadaHelps: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/FOODassn/
  • A huge thank you to the volunteers who help out each month.

    About

    On the 2nd Thursday of each month, the CBC Community Reporter for Dakwäkäda-Haines Junction (Kari Johnston) speaks on CBC morning radio show at around 8:20 am. Tune in at 103.5 FM.

    +++ Kari's Note +++
    These transcripts are not verbatim of what was said on the radio. These notes are prepared in advance of the interview. Due to time, and how I am prompted by the host, not everything is read on air.

    Where do I get the content?

    Most of the content is written by other community members. I just edit it a bit and try to make it flow. I do seek out some content myself, and I often refer to the Happenings of Haines Junction Facebook Page.

    I try to email community event organizers a few days in advance to get the content. If you would like to be on that email list, please use the contact me below.
