Intro

• It has been a busy summer
  
• Farmers are reporting a good hay crop
  
• Gardners are reporting a fair harvest -- wishing it had been warmer and felt like a bit of a let down after two years of exceptional growing
  
• Augusto was a delight
  
• The Quilters hosted a fabulous showing of their Quilt Canada contributions
  
• Izzy and Jereme hosted a well attended and super fun car show over the Labour Day long weekend
  
• Local Sonny Parker was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2024 Canadian Wildlife Photography of the Year for Canadian Geographic
  
• There is a fantastic dinosaur cut out on the trail by the Dezadeash to delight the young and young at heart!
  
• The Champagne and Aishihik General Assembly was last weekend was blast
  
• Lots of great concerts at the Bakery
  
• The community market was bustling and so great to see so many great vendors
  
• A huge thank you and gratitude to the organizers of the territory-wide Healing Walk through July and into August, many of whom are HJ residents.

Haines Junction Public LibraryStorytime and Family Time

• Storytime is Fridays from 10-11am for little ones 2-4 years old and their grown-ups
  

Learn to BirdThere is a Yukon Bird Club event on  Saturday Sept 28 in Haines Junction. Start time is 11am on Rainbow street lead by myself. Meet at Rainbow street but park at the Convention Center or nearby. Over the years there have been a few rarities in this area because the locals are bird friendly with many feeders and water supplied. A learn to bird event for 2 hours. 
Kluane National ParkPrescribed BurnOperations began this week to assess the conditions for the Alder Creek Prescribed Fire in Kluane National Park and Reserve. Fire crews made up of Parks Canada, Champagne Aishihik and Yukon Wildland Fire Management have been working on a prescribed fire near Alder Creek. This prescribed fire is part of the Dákeyi ukaanathį̀ jè forest health project between Parks Canada, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations and Kluane First Nation. This project is taking tangible steps toward restoring the health of forest ecosystems and reducing the threat of wildfires in the park. 


Visitor Information

• The Thechàl Dhâl’ Visitor Centre is now closed for the season, the Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor Centre remains open from 9am – 6pm daily until September 22.
  
• The Kathleen Lake campground will close for the season at 4pm on September 22.
  
• Backcountry registration is required until November 15 and hikers can self-register at the kiosk outside the Daku Cultural Centre after the visitor centre closes.
  
• The Northern Nights Festival is coming up! The festival will take place from September 20 -22 at Mät’àtäna Män (Kathleen Lake). Enjoy family friendly activities, music and sky viewing with the Yukon Astronomical Society – bring a camp chair and a mug for hot chocolate!

• Tonight! On the evening of September 12th a Parks Canada Interpreter will deliver a campfire talk about the recovery of the cache left behind by the Washburn party in the icefields 85 years ago at the Kluane Lake Research Station at 7pm – everyone welcome!
  

Village of Haines Junction 
Municipal Election

• The nomination period for the 2024 Village of Haines Junction Municipal Election is now open
  
• Those planning to run for mayor or councilor positions can pick up nomination forms at the Village office or online at the link below.
  
• Nomination forms will be available for pick up during regular office hours, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  
• Nomination papers can be submitted until noon on September 26. No submissions will be accepted after noon on September 26, 2024.
  
• Find candidate information packages as well as details on how to register to vote and participate in the 2024 Village of Haines Junction Municipal Election online at:

Kluane Lake Research Station

• Our final community night of the 2024 season is tomorrow (Sep 12) at 7 pm!
  
• Join us for a campfire talk with Emily Schneider (Parks Canada) on the Washburn-Bates cache discovery and Dr. Alyce Johnson (KFN), whose father Sam Johnson helped rescue the mountaineers on the Dän Zhùr (Donjek) River 87 years ago.
  

Alaska Highway West Local Area Plan Steering Committee
The Government of Yukon is still seeking individuals interested in serving as the Government of Yukon nominees on the Steering Committee that will assist in developing a draft local area plan for the Alaska Highway West planning area. The planning area is along the Alaska Highway, and extends from Ibex Valley to Haines Junction and down to Quill Creek (map attached).

Thrift StoreThe Haines Junction Thrift Shop, located in the basement of the Log Church is open every Thursday from 2 -6 starting this Thursday September 12.   There is a wide variety of clothing available for all sizes and prices are always kept low.  Besides clothing they also have some household items, books and toys.   Please remember to bring your own bag and cash, as only cash sales are possible.  


Sports and Fitness
YogaLotus yoga classes will begin again starting September 15th and run until June 2025.
Sundays @6pm at Frostbite Fitness Gym @ 103 Lupine Drive. Join Sarah-Monique in a 75 mins FLOW class of stretching and strengthening.Donation amount of $15 recommended. Please bring a mat and comfortable clothes.
