Intro
  • Chicha’a Kwä̀k’ǜ
  • That warm spell and rain has added a layer of ice on top of the fairly deep snow. Ski trails are great for walking, just avoid the track. They are solid packed and not slippery!
  • Lots of great fundraisers lately for the Dakwakada Dancers as the get ready for a trip to Alaska – a delicious breakfast and spaghetti dinner
  • The grad class has also been hosting a lot of great concessions, bottle drives and their famous pizza deliveries are happening soon!
  • Congrats to all of the teams competing at the U13 Yukon Championships last weekend. A huge thank you to the organizers and volunteers on a tremendous event.
  • Volleyball Tournament was held last night – congrats to all the competitors
  • The Post Office has reduced hours for a while until the Postmaster position is filled. Hours are posted on the front door each week.

Around Town
The St Elias Lions Club is celebrating 60 years of service!
  • THE ST ELIAS LIONS CLUB WAS ESTABLISHED IN MARCH OF 1964 - WHICH MEANS WE ARE CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF SERVING OUR COMMUNITY.  In an effort to create some permanent history, we are putting out a request for any Lions event photos, stories, memorabilia etc you may have dating from 1964 - today (photos will be copied and returned). Please reach out to myself or another Lions member with what you would like to share.
Haines Junction Public LibraryBlind Date with a book
  • February 6 to March 5. Choose a book (which is wrapped to be a surprise! take it home, give it a read, fill out the evaluation form and bring back to the library to enter a draw! Draw will be on March 6.
Storytime and Family Time
  • Storytime is Fridays from 10-11am for little ones 2-4 years old and their grown-ups
  • Family Time is Saturday mornings from 10am to noon for kids under 6 and their grown-ups (older siblings welcome too). This is a casual drop-in program for littles to come read books, do puzzles and a craft!
St Elias Seniors SocietyA note from Patty Moore:
  • Regarding the carpet bowling and floor curling on Monday afternoons, we are actively recruiting new people as we’ve lost so many of our members to Whitehorse facilities or they have passed away.   We would also welcome out-of-towners that would like to join us any Monday and if they contact me ahead of time by email, I will do a blitz here so people know to come out as we’ll have “guests”   and I can make it an “event”.
  • Right now we have one day of chair yoga happening in the Atrium because our instructor is only available Wednesday at 3:45 PM after her work at the school.   I am working on lining up another instructor for a second day but at this point only Wednesday is confirmed.  We have switched to the Atrium to accommodate a larger group of participants and it’s a lovely space for our class.   All adults are welcome, not just Seniors and Elders.   It is an excellent muscle and balance exercise.   Again, people should contact me for more information if they are interested in coming out and I can let them know what equipment is needed.
  •  This Friday the 9th, we have a hot lunch at the Convention Center for Seniors and Elders starting at 11:30.   YG Continuing Care is coming out to talk about a dementia project (poster for info attached) and Nurse Andrew will be set up in the Atrium to do blood pressure checks as part of Heart Health Month.  This is open to all seniors and elders in the Kluane Region, not just our 60-ish Society members.

    About

On the 2nd Thursday of each month, the CBC Community Reporter for Dakwäkäda-Haines Junction (Kari Johnston) speaks on CBC morning radio show at around 8:20 am. Tune in at 103.5 FM.

    +++ Kari's Note +++
These transcripts are not verbatim of what was said on the radio. These notes are prepared in advance of the interview. Due to time, and how I am prompted by the host, not everything is read on air.

Where do I get the content?

Most of the content is written by other community members. I just edit it a bit and try to make it flow. I do seek out some content myself, and I often refer to the Happenings of Haines Junction Facebook Page.

I try to email community event organizers a few days in advance to get the content. If you would like to be on that email list, please use the contact me below.
