Thrift Shop The Thrift Shop in the basement of the Log Church will be open April 11 and 25 this month. Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Spring Cook-Off Tuesday, April 3 at Dákų̀ Cultural Centre at 6:30 pm, bring a dish to share and enter in the cook-off! Community Clean-Up CAFN and the Village of Haines Junction are hosting a Community Spring Clean-Up on Friday, May 3. Join the community for a BBQ lunch at noon at Dákų̀ Cultural Centre and then head-out for the clean-up from 1 to 4 pm. Dákų̀ nän tsʼeddhyèt Dance Festival The Dákų̀ nän tsʼeddhyèt dance festival is happening here in Haines Junction June 13-16, 2019 at Dákų̀ culture centre. The festival takes place every other year and is an incredible coming together of dance, singing and drumming. More details to come soon! Haines Junction Minor Hockey HJMH is hosting their end of the year banquet and awards on Tuesday, April 9 @ 5:30-7:00 in the Grand Hall of the Convention Centre. We will be celebrating our great hockey season, our wonderful young athletes and giving thanks to our dedicated coaches, volunteers and supporters!!! A huge congratulation to Danielle Drummond who manages our Haines Junction Minor Hockey program who one of the winners of the 2019 Fred Heslop Minor Hockey award winners! Romp n Run Romp n Run has fun, wiggles and movement for children 4 and under every Monday and Wednesday, 10am -11:30am, at the Haines Junction Hockey Arena mezzanine. Our programs include a new Little Chefs program, a parent and tot yoga program, visits from the Child Development centre and lots of other great activities. Healthy snack and coffee provided. Please wear comfortable clothes and indoor shoes. Parent or caregiver participation is required. Thank you to Partners for Children and Lotteries Yukon for funding our program. Birds! On Monday, May 13, join local bird enthusiast Julie Bauer for a trip to view spring migrants. Meet at Frosty Freeze at 7pm for a 2 hour the two hour bird-a-rama extravaganza! Yukon College Permaculture for Northern Backyard Gardens Learn how to take a holistic view of your garden, how to grow a wide variety of nutritious food, increase biodiversity and food resilience in backyard gardens by co-creating efficient, sustainable eco structures that work with the natural patterns of our cold climate. We will talk about everything from the living soil food web, living mulch and groundcover, waterwise gardening, edible hedges, berry orchards to food forest ideas and special permaculture features. This is a full-day course taught by Agnes Seitz. The class costs $349 + GST and is on April 28 starting at 8:30 am. The deadline to register is April 23. The conference theme is focused on Regional Collaboration for Economic Development within the western Alaska Highway corridor. The conference will be guided by four key note addresses with the following presentations titles:
Child and Family Services Act Review The review of the Child and Family Services Act is underway. The Independent Advisory Committee will be hosting a drop-in session for residents of Haines Junction to get your input. Location: Mezzanine at the Arena Date: April 9, 2019 Time: 2 to 9pm Arts and Culture Junction Arts and Music JAM 20th anniversary celebration dinner and dance featuring Major Funk and the Employment. - May 4th 2019 Come celebrate Junction Arts and Music’s 20th anniversary on May 4th, 2019. Enjoy a delicious dinner, then dance the night away with Major Funk and the Employment at the St. Elias Convention Centre in Haines Junction. Dinner tickets are $15 and pre-sale only. Dance tickets are $20 or $10 for seniors and youth available for pre-sale and at the door. A cash bar will be available so minors must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are cash only. Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival There are a just a few weekend passes left for the 2019 Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival (June 7-9 in Haines Junction). Organizers expect the festival to sell out in the next few weeks, so book your tickets today so you don't miss out on the Music, Mountains and Magic this year! Music Jam Night Join fellow musicians at the Village Bakery Green Room on Friday nights from 5:30pm to 9pm for drop in Jam sessions. Bring your own instrument. Bring your own tea. Bring some firewood. Thank you to the Village Bakery for donating the space 😊 Writing Group Local author, Allison Martin, has started a local writing group. The group meets the first Saturday of each month, so the next meeting is February 2. It’s a drop-in, casual group for anyone interested in working on their words. The group meets at the Haines Junction Library on the first Saturday of each month from 10am to 2pm. Art Journaling Group Kim Henkel hosts an Art Journaling group at the St. Elias School art room every Tuesday from 7-9pm. Bring supplies if you have them, if not, Kim is happy to share hers. Daffodil Campaign! A huge thank you to all of the volunteers and supports who have made this year’s Yukon daffodil campaign in support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Jean C Barber Lodge a huge success. We’re still tallying things up but this year we’ll have gross sales and donations of around $20,000. A special thank you to the volunteers in rural Yukon who help us bring this campaign so many communities: Vuntut Gwitchin Government in Old Crow, Bonanza Market in Dawson City, Bobbi-Lee Melancon and Joella Hogan in Mayo, Shelley Sutherland in Faro, Alice Boland in Carmacks, the St. Elias Seniors and the Little Green Apple in Haines Junction and Vi & Cor in Atlin.
