Soccer Coach Cindi Cowie was blown away by the incredible athleticism shown by 4 of our local youth who made the Arctic Winter Games Futsal (soccer) Team last weekend. Ethny Dulac on the Junior Girls Team and Alia Drummond, Elisha Dulac, and Ella Lawrence were chosen for the Juvenile Girls team. Way to go team! Drop-in Sports Adult and Teen Badminton -- Wednesdays starting from 7-8:30 pm in the school gym. We provide all birdies and racquets and it's free of charge! Hockey -- Mondays and Fridays – 7:30-9 pm Curling -- Sundays 1-4 pm Soccer -- Thursdays from 7:30-9 pm at the school gym. Teens and elders welcome! Lots of exercise, laughter and fun ! Yoga Mondays at 5:15 at Yukon College, free. Tuesdays at 5:15 pm, at Yukon College, tone and stretch, free Wednesdays at noon, at Yukon College, restorative, free. Thursdays at 5:15 pm, at Yukon College, tone and stretch, free. Romp n Run Romp n Run has fun, wiggles and movement for children 4 and under every Tuesday and Thursday until December 12th, 10am -11:30am, at the Haines Junction Arena mezzanine. Our programs include a Little Chefs program, a parent and tot yoga program, craft programs, visits from the Child Development centre and lots of other great activities. Healthy snack and coffee provided. Please wear comfortable clothes and indoor shoes. Parent or caregiver participation is required. Thank you to Partners for Children for funding our program. Bill Brewster Arena Public Skating Monday – 3-4:30 pm Wednesday – 3:15-4:30 pm Thursday – 3:15-4:30 pm & 6:15-8 pm Friday – 3-6 pm Saturday – 10am-11:45am (beginners) and noon-4 pm Sundays – 5-7 pm Haines Junction Minor Hockey Minor Hockey is teaming up with Arctic Edge to offer 2 FREE Learn to Skate Clinics. These will take place on Sunday, November 17 and January 19 These clinics are geared to 4-10 year olds (some exceptions may apply - please Danielle for more information.) Also, please note that you do not have to be registered with Minor Hockey in order to participate. The HJMH season runs from Oct 15 to March 5. We provide children ages 4-17 - 2 ice times per week, with games, skating and skills clinics or tournaments on most weekends. St. Elias Seniors Society Join us on Tuesdays for our weekly carpet bowling and floor curling in the Convention Center Atrium from 1:30 to 3:00. This is open to all seniors and elders from 60 to 97. Wednesdays is our Drop-In day from 1:30 to 3:00 in the Social Room on the lower floor, south end of the Senior’s Apartment Building on Martin Street. Yearly membership is $12.00 and includes meals and other benefits. Come on out and meet some of the 51+ members! The 3rd Wednesday of every month is our Birthday Cake day for everyone celebrating their birthday that month. Thursday at 1:30 we have an indoor walking group in the Grand Hall of the Convention Center. We count our loops and collectively add them up. When we have walked the distance for Haines Junction to Kathleen Lake, the walkers will celebrate with a special dinner. Come on out and enjoy the exercise! Wellness Vaping – Youth Information Session. Learn what it does to your body. November 12, Starts at 7pm. All youth are welcome. There will be snacks too! Hosted by the CAFN Youth Centre. Vaping Talk for Parents. Tuesday, November 12 at 5pm. At Da Kų Cultural Centre. A great presentation about what vaping is and what our youth are learning about it at school. Dinner provided. Hosted by CAFN, YTG Health Promotion, the Haines Junction Health Centre (nda dān kų) and St. Elias Community School. Flu shots will also be available. If you would like to host a flu shot clinic for you and your coworkers, contact the clinic to make arrangements. The next public clinic is November 13 and 14 from 2-4pm at the TD Bank Lobby in HJ. EducationSt. Elias Community SchoolIt’s book fair time again. Coming to your local school library December 2nd to December 6th! All purchases benefit our school! Yukon College Red Cross Babysitting First Aid course November 15 (6-8pm), November 16 (9am-noon) and November 17 (9am to noon) $125, deadline to register is November 12. Call 634-8800. Haines Junction Mountain Festival We’re hosting two events - mark your calendars! For the last three years the Haines Junction Mountain Festival has been held at the end of November / early December. There is a new format for this year. A celebration of the United Nation’s International Mountain Day will be held on the evening of International Mountain Day, Wednesday December 11, at the St. Elias Convention Centre in Dakwäkäda-Haines Junction. The event will celebrate events coincident with celebrations held in mountain regions across Canada and around the world. The family evening will feature Mountain Music, Films, Refreshments, mountain themed presentations, as well as a mountain themed trivia event suitable for the whole family. The event is free. The main Haines Junction Mountain Festival will be held the weekend of February 7th through 9th, 2020. As with previous years this event will feature displays, films, food, and the opportunity to hear diverse mountain themed and travel presentations as well as see world class films. With the longer days in February the festival will also be planning outdoor activities for the whole family. Both events are organized by volunteers and supported in part by the newly funded Canadian Mountain Network. Community Engagement Climate Change Walk Fridays at 12:10pm at the gazebo by the muffin. We walk about 10 blocks (about 20 minutes). If you feel creative, make a sign. Arts and Culture Haines Junction Public Library Storyhour at the pubic library for 2-5 year olds and their adults. Fridays from 10-11. Free. Mark your calendars! The Date for the Library Craft Sale is Thursday November 14. Call 867-634-2215 for more information or to reserve a table ($10). Donations of baked goods. All proceeds from baked goods support the Library board. Art Journal Group Tuesdays in the School ART ROOM. Join in anytime between 7-9 PM. I have supplies and can help you get started if you want. Junction Arts and Music We have a jazz group, the Jennifer Scott Quintet, coming Nov 23 to the St Elias Convention Centre. Show starts at 7:30pm, tickets are $20 cash at the door, $10 for students (13-18) and seniors (65+). Kids 12 and under free. We also have a felting workshop with Yukon fibre artist Mary Beattie on December 4, from 6pm-8pm. It will include materials and two hours of instruction to create a flat, felted scene. Tickets will be limited to 20 people and they can email [email protected] to reserve their spot. $35 at the door. Call for Fashion and Textile Artists The Junction Artist-in-Residence (JAR) Program is excited to announce a Call for Artists for its third residency term from July – October, 2020. We will select one artist-in-residence for this term to stay for a three-month residency in the community of Haines Junction, Yukon— in the heart of Kluane National Park and Reserve and on the Traditional Territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations. Home Routes Concerts We’ve got the first copy of the draft schedule for the 13th Annual National Concert Series: Home Routes. A big thank you to the gracious hosts/organizers who open up their living rooms to bring live music to your community. Home Routes concerts are hosted in over 150 communities across Canada. This model of arts production makes it feasible for professional musicians to reach communities throughout the country.
