This is the December 14, 2023 CBC Yukon morning radio community report for Dakwakada-Haines Junction. This report is produced from information sent by the community or gathered from bulletin boards and Facebook groups for HJ. Please let Kari Johnston know of any errors or omissions. The report is also published to volunteerhainesjunction.ca
Intro
  • Wild weather the past few weeks – really quite warm, lots of snow up the highway. Road closed to Haines. Slippery conditions on the highways. Drive safe!
  • We lost a local legend in early December, Henry Henkel. He lived a long lovely life.  He was a long time Haines Junction resident who died last week. He built our beautiful, iconic log church in the late 1980’s. It’s a wonderful place to host events – Bluegrass Festival goers revel in the Sunday gospel and we all love the Thrift Shop that it hosts in the basement. Our condolences to Henry’s family and friends. (When I put out the call for this month’s report, community members asked that I include Henry)
  • We have had a lot of loss in our community over the past month and this year. Yukon communities are small and so interconnected and we deeply feel the loss of community members. But it’s also where we see our strengths, as we come together to mourn and celebrate with each other.
  • Fire Department, CAFN staff and local volunteers have started to put in the ice at the outdoor arena beside the youth center! Thank you to Rob McPhee for taking the lead on this!
  • Amazing Career Fair on November 30 hosted by CAFN. Over 70 exhibitors! Great turnout. Congratulations to the HR department for organizing an exceptional event.
  • Food Bank Christmas Hampers went out on Wednesday. Thank you to the incredible volunteers and Whitehorse Food Bank. About 1/5th of our catchment receives a monthly hamper. Visit hjfoodassociation.com for more information or to donate. We still have a few turkeys, if you need a bit of help this Christmas, reach out to Kari at 335-0440 or hjfoodhamper.com
  • Lots of great holiday events have happened – open houses and gingerbread house making dinners and beading/crafting workshops…

As indicated on the poster, interested youth can submit a resume and cover letter to apply, but also feel free to reach out to the STEM team at [email protected] or to local campus staff at [email protected] to express your interest more informally. We are thrilled at the prospect of having more STEM programming for youth in our community and to have paid work in the STEM realm right here in Haines Junction. If you are a working professional interested in playing a role in STEM programming, please reach out for a chat to explore possibilities! Thank you for your interest, and please consider sharing this opportunity with youth who might be interested!

    About

    On the 2nd Thursday of each month, the CBC Community Reporter for Dakwäkäda-Haines Junction (Kari Johnston) speaks on CBC morning radio show at around 8:20 am. Tune in at 103.5 FM.

    +++ Kari's Note +++
    These transcripts are not verbatim of what was said on the radio. These notes are prepared in advance of the interview. Due to time, and how I am prompted by the host, not everything is read on air.

    Where do I get the content?

    Most of the content is written by other community members. I just edit it a bit and try to make it flow. I do seek out some content myself, and I often refer to the Happenings of Haines Junction Facebook Page.

    I try to email community event organizers a few days in advance to get the content. If you would like to be on that email list, please use the contact me below.
