Champagne and Aishihik First Nations The 4th Annual Community BBQ Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 4-7pm Da Ku will be hosting a community BBQ to celebrate another wonderful visitor season in Haines Junction. Come for the burgers, stay for the door prizes! Kohklux Map Event On the weekend of October 19th Champagne and Aishihik First Nations will be hosting an event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Kohklux map. Drawn in 1869 by the Tlingit Chief Kohklux, this rare archival document is one of the few examples of indigenous map making in a northern context. It is especially important to Champagne and Aishihik because it is the oldest map of dákeyi (our traditional territory). A program is being developed to share the story behind the map as well as family and community stories related to the period of the indigenous-controlled fur trade - and generally celebrate the Dan (Southern Tutchone) - Tlingit connection in our history. By-election day will be Monday, October 28, 2019 from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm Nominations to Run for Office Nomination forms can be picked up at the CAFN Administration Office in either Haines Junction or Whitehorse or downloaded from the CAFN website (cafn.ca). The forms are also available from the Chief Returning Officer. All nomination forms for candidates must be filed by 4:30 pm on Monday, September 23, 2019 with the Chief Returning Officer for the candidate to be eligible to run for office. Voting by mail-in ballot. Only electors who do not live near a polling station will be sent a mail-in ballot package. Citizens with a mailing address of Whitehorse, Haines Junction or Champagne will not be sent a mail-in ballot package, unless they complete an Application to Vote by Mail form and provide it to the Chief Returning Officer. Home Routes Concerts We’ve got the first copy of the draft schedule for the 13th Annual National Concert Series: Home Routes. A big thank you to the gracious hosts/organizers who open up their living rooms to bring live music to your community. Home Routes concerts are hosted in over 150 communities across Canada. This model of arts production makes it feasible for professional musicians to reach communities throughout the country. They return home with new connections, lifelong friends, money in their pockets, recordings sold, and usually want to sign up for another tour. They were able to raise $1,188 for CPAWS Yukon who will be putting those funds toward protecting the Porcupine caribou herd! The Village Bakery will be open until and including September 15th and will be blowing out over-stocked items daily until then. We want to sincerely thank each and every person that supported us this season, it has been the best one yet! The Porcupine caribou herd migrates over 4,000 kilometres across northern Yukon, Alaska and NWT — the longest journey of any land mammal on earth. Caribou give birth to their calves on the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, called Iizhik Gwats’an Gwandaii Goodlit by the Gwich’in, the Sacred Place Where Life Begins. In December of 2017 the U.S. Government opened the Arctic Refuge to oil and gas development. Drilling in the calving grounds could force caribou to give birth in areas with more predators, more noxious insects and poorer vegetation. Drilling could have serious consequences for the health of the herd and the Gwich’in communities that rely on the caribou. CPAWS Yukon is working with the Vuntut Gwitchin to defend the Porcupine caribou herd. We’re calling on Canadian banks to withhold funding from companies that would drill in the Arctic Refuge. We’re closely watching the environmental review of drilling in the Arctic Refuge, to make sure the U.S. Government complies with its environmental laws.
