Youth Roots: Photovoice Project
  • Last January, we were Yukon youth collaborated with @markkellyphotography & @andrewserack Photography and YG Health Promotion to host @youthrootsyukon - PhotoVoice Project. The  PhotoVoice Project travelled to 5 communities and all communities were represented in Whitehorse.
  • The photographs were shown at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Center for more than 5 weeks (extended due to popularity) and it has now landed in Dakwäkäda- Haines Junction. This special exhibit is made of Dakwäkäda- Haines Junction Youth exclusively.
  • Sarah-Monique, teacher at the St Elias Community School opened her classroom door to help make this amazing workshop happen by hosting a safe space where young people learned how to use cameras with Mark and Andrew. Youth then kept the cameras for an entire week and were asked to highlight what brings them joy and what helps them get up in the morning. They played around, some alone, some with friends but they all identified important protective factors. Bringing positivity into their young lives helped them figure out what it is that makes them smile when it’s dark and -30C outside …
  • After a week of trial and and error for the young photographers, Mark and Andrew came back to the community and taught everyone to digitally process their pictures.
  • With the support of @samis.photo some pictures were processed through software to include youth’s personal art.
  • We are proud to invite the community of Dakwäkäda - Haines Junction to come to the Visitor Information Center in Dakù and admire the great artistic skills of our young people.
  • Thank you to all the great models, asset builders, adult supports that help these young people be part of a wonderful youth photography exhibit. Thank you Marty Samis for volunteering helping to set it all up, could not have done it without you!

    About

    On the 2nd Thursday of each month, the CBC Community Reporter for Dakwäkäda-Haines Junction (Kari Johnston) speaks on CBC morning radio show at around 8:20 am. Tune in at 103.5 FM.

    +++ Kari's Note +++
    These transcripts are not verbatim of what was said on the radio. These notes are prepared in advance of the interview. Due to time, and how I am prompted by the host, not everything is read on air.

    Where do I get the content?

    Most of the content is written by other community members. I just edit it a bit and try to make it flow. I do seek out some content myself, and I often refer to the Happenings of Haines Junction Facebook Page.

    I try to email community event organizers a few days in advance to get the content. If you would like to be on that email list, please use the contact me below.
