Grad Class Fundraiser
On Friday, January 17, all the grads students will be hosting a radio bingo party to help us fundraise for our special grad day!🎓 well will be serving Burgers and Indian Tacos and other canteen snacks! Bring over your bingo packages or just come on over and get some good grub!😄 The doors open at 6pm for the concession. Bingo starts at 7:15 pm. The fun all takes place at Da Ku Cultural Centre. Bring your own bingo package. There will be a bake sale, cookie and muffin dough sales and a 50/50 draw. We have 9 students graduating from St. Elias School.

Pom Pom Challenge!
The very popular pom pom challenge is back again this year in support of the Arctic Winter Games. Non-profit groups in Mayo and Haines Junction are invited to sew 30 pom poms for a $200 honoraria for your group/organization. Please fill out the application form located at volunteerhainesjunction.com by January 20, 2020 to register your group. Pompoms must be completed by February 14, 2020. This year we’re using wolf fur from trappers from the traditional territory of the Na-Cho Nyäk Dun.

Yukon Water Board – Aishihik Relicensing
Notice of Type A Application and Public Hearing: Aishihik Generating Station. The hearing is scheduled to take place from January 13 to 17 in Haines Junction at the St. Elias Convention Centre starting at 9:00am. At the close of Monday’s proceedings the board is scheduled to begin the hearing at 9:30 am on Tuesday to accommodate possible travel delays due the weather.
 
Alcan 200
The Alcan 200 takes place on January 7/18 this year starting in Haines, Alaska and racing to the Dezadeash Lodge. Driver sign-up is at 5:30pm at the Fogcutter Bar. Visit www.alcan200.org for more information

Romp n Run
Romp n Run has fun, wiggles and movement for children 4 and under every Tuesday and Thursday until December 12th, 10am -11:30am, at the Haines Junction Arena mezzanine. Our programs include a Little Chefs program, a parent and tot yoga program, craft programs, visits from the Child Development centre and lots of other great activities. Healthy snack and coffee provided. Please wear comfortable clothes and indoor shoes. Parent or caregiver participation is required.

Haines Junction Minor Hockey
There are Minor Hockey Events happening almost every single weekend from now until March 6. 
 
On January 19th we are teaming up with Arctic Edge and offering Haines Junction youth, ages 4-10 another FREE learn to skate Clinic. Youth do not need to be registered with Minor Hockey in order to participate.
 
On January 25-26 we are hosting our 23rd annual Female Jamboree. A fun filled weekend of hockey! Come on out to the Bill Brewster arena and cheer on your local female players!
 
On January 31-Feb 1 and 2 HJMH is hosting the Atom Yukon Championships. Players from around the Yukon (Whitehorse, Watson Lake, Dawson, Teslin, Faro and Haines Junction are coming together for a full fun filled weekend of hockey! Come on out and cheer on our local Huskies and the rest of our Yukon youth and enjoy some delicious food from HJMH's concession.
 
On Thursday February 6th we are hosting FH Collins U18 players for a day of hockey! Come on out!

St. Elias Seniors Society (ages 60+)
Join us on Mondays for our weekly carpet bowling or floor curling in the Convention Center Atrium from 1:30 to 3:00.

Wednesdays is our Drop-In day from 1:30 to 3:00 in the Social Room on the lower floor, south end of the Senior’s Apartment Building on Martin Street.  Yearly membership is $12.00 and includes meals and other benefits.  Come on out and meet some of the 51+ members! The 2nd Wednesday of every month is our Birthday Cake day for everyone celebrating their birthday that month.

Thursday at 1:30 we have an indoor walking group in the Grand Hall of the Convention Center.  We count our loops and collectively add them up.  When we have walked the distance for Haines Junction to Kathleen Lake, the walkers will celebrate with a special dinner.  Come on out and enjoy the exercise!

Right provider at the right time
Seeing the ‘right provider at the right time’ means seeing the health care provider who can help you when you need care.
 
Dr. Freeman and the nurses work together as a health care team to provide the best care possible to everyone.
 
Dr. Freeman’s clinic is downstairs and by appointment only at 634-3838. She is a family doctor available for all permanent Haines Junction residents, with the transfer of their medical files to her clinic.
 
The primary health care nurses and public health nurse are by appointment or walk-in at 634-4444. Emergencies or urgent cases are always seen in the upstairs clinic with the nurse.
 
For a new or urgent medical concern, the primary health care nurse would be the right provider to see. They can consult with the doctor as needed for abnormal findings or temporary prescription renewals until you can get in to see the doctor.

Haines Junction Mountain Festival
On International Mountain Day, Wednesday, December 11, 2019, the fourth Haines Junction Mountain Festival invites everyone to an evening of mountain music, films, presentations, refreshments, and a first-ever Mountain Trivia Competition. 
 
Admission is free to this all-ages event, at the St. Elias Convention Centre in Haines Junction (Dakwäkäda), beginning at 6:00 p.m.
 
Longer days in February allow the festival to continue with outdoor activities for the whole family, February 7 - 9, 2020, in and around Haines Junction (Dakwäkäda.) Over that weekend, the Festival includes mountain displays, world-class films, food, activities and travel presentations focussed on the Canadian Mountain Network’s theme “Mountains Matter.” 
 
This year’s theme is “Mountains Matter for Youth.” 
 
The two-part festival is organized by volunteers, and supported in part by the national, newly-funded Canadian Mountain Network.

Junction Artist in Residence Program
The Junction Artist-in-Residence (JAR) Program is pleased to announce Justine Woods as the selected artist for the 2020 JAR Program.
 
Justine Woods is an interdisciplinary Métis fashion designer, visual storyteller and indigenous beader originally from the Georgian Bay Métis Community located near Midland/Penetanguishene, Ontario. Currently based in Tkaronto (Toronto, Ontario), Woods combines her skills as a bespoke tailor with her practice as a Métis storyteller by incorporating hand beaded designs onto garments she creates.
 
“My design practice as a Métis storyteller and beader originated as a way for me personally connect with my heritage at a young age”, Woods states. “I was intrigued by the power that beading has to visually convey a story through the exploration of my own indigenous identity.” Through these explorations, Woods has engaged with various forms of knowledge sharing about indigenous culture, tradition and identity via her community relationships and through her artistic practice.
 
Wood’s design practice explores how beadwork generates cultural narratives that go beyond the surface of the material. She uses beadwork as an artistic output to visually share knowledge, history, traditions, spirituality and relationships found within indigenous culture. One of Justine’s many interests within her practice is how the re-interpretation of Western styles and garments can serve as a tool for decolonization.
 
The Artist-in-Residence will spend 3-months fully integrated within the natural and cultural setting of Haines Junction, YT and surrounding area. During this time, the artist will create a series of wearable works that reflect the program's theme of 'Sewing through the Landscape'. Both artist and community members will have several opportunities to engage with one another through a variety of presentations, workshops, and public programming.
 
The 2020 program will be the third term for JAR, which occurs between July and October every other year.

1 Night of Incredible Improv Comedy (Pivot Festival)
Becky Johnson of The Sufferettes and writer for Baroness von Sketch returns to the Yukon, this time accompanied by Taz VanRassel of The Sunday Service improv troupe from Vancouver, BC. 

With their combined credits, Becky and Taz are experts in improv theatre and will be treating Pivot-goers to a night of diverse and heartfelt longform improvisation.  

The suggested age for this performance is 13 and up.
Tickets are $20 cash at the door
$10 for seniors (65+) and students (13-18)
Kids are free
 
La Belle Vie en Hiver
Escape the winter mood on February 14 at 7:30 pm. Come and sample a curated selection of wines, cheeses and artisan breads while listening to live music. Tickets are on sale now and are limited to 40 spaces. Please send your etransfer ($45/person) to [email protected] to secure your spot.

Home Routes Concerts
We’ve got the first copy of the draft schedule for the 13th Annual National Concert Series: Home Routes. A big thank you to the gracious hosts/organizers who open up their living rooms to bring live music to your community. Home Routes concerts are hosted in over 150 communities across Canada. This model of arts production makes it feasible for professional musicians to reach communities throughout the country. They return home with new connections, lifelong friends, money in their pockets, recordings sold, and usually want to sign up for another tour. Visit homeroutes.ca for more information.

They are a dog boarding kennel, that opened on December 14 and had a busy Christmas season taking care of dogs! Over the past weeks, we have had clients from HJ, Whitehorse, Burwash and Beaver Creek! We are a whole family business, and the kennel is adjacent to our home on our property Whitehorse side of HJ.
