Dakwäkäda - Haines Junction Community Report CBC – Tuesday, July 9, 2019

Augusto!
The third annual Augusto! Children’s Festival, Yukon's first dedicated art and music festival for children, will take place from August 9th to 11th, 2019 at the St. Elias Convention Centre.
 
Our local Dakwäkäda Dancers will open the festival at 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon followed by Soir de Semaine for the Friday night family dance, with their special blend of Franco-rock, ska, reggae, folk and funk. With their colourful costumes, painted faces and highly interactive French music, they promise to be a great start to the weekend!
 
During the day Saturday and half day Sunday, 29 one hour workshops will be offered where children aged 5 to 12 will have the opportunity to work with professional artists, and try their hand at several different visual art and performing art activities.
 
Workshops will include Stage Skills, West African Dance, Physical Activity & Games, Music Exploration, Squeakers & Kazoos, Southern Tutchone Song & Dance, Polymer Clay Doggie Zipper Pulls, Mono Printing with Acrylic Paint, Wire Sculpture Creatures, Needle Felting, Colourful Paper Long Tailed Creatures, Fur & Feather Creations, Mad Hatters, Clay Story Buckets and Treasure Chests, Electronics and Storytelling.
 
In tandem with the workshop hours, Toddler Town will be a mini festival for ages 4 and under. Located in the arena mezzanine, this younger set can take part in craft activities, storybook corners, colouring craft sessions and mini concerts every half hour, or in spare moments, the amazing cardboard village provides several colourful structures to explore.
 
All ages will come together for our feature performance on Saturday night – a one hour mix of comedy and circus with the Kamikaze Fireflies www.kamikazefireflies.ca As an opening act for this festival highlight, West African Fana Soro will share traditional music and drumming from the Ivory Coast.
 
Tickets have been on sale since June 17th and the festival is now 60% sold out. There are still lots of workshop spaces available in the larger workshops – stage skills, West African Dance, Physical Activity & Music, Music Exploration, Squeakers & Kazoos, Southern Tutchone Song & Dance, Mono Printing with Acrylic Paint, Wire Sculpture Creatures, Colourful Long Tailed Creatures, Mad Hatters, Clay Story Buckets and Storytelling.

• Access to Toddler Town – Saturday daytime and Sunday morning - structured activities, snacks, roving performers, short concerts and the amazing cardboard village!

Help us make Augusto! a zero-waste event!
 
Augusto! is asking kids from 2 to 12 to submit art to be used in a series of prayer flag type decorations to be used at Augusto! This is so we can move away from balloons to more environmentally friendly decorations at the festivals.
 
We are asking young artists to submit an original and colourful work of art by mail to Box 5326 Haines Junction, YT Y0B1L0 or drop-off at the Art Guild Gallery in the basement of the log church.
 
We will photograph the originals for the flags and than the original works will be shown in December in an exhibition at the Atco Children’s Gallery in the Yukon Arts Centre.
 
Create an image of something that makes you happy or what you like about Augusto! Children's Festival.
 
We are hoping to get lots of response and to continue to grow the idea over the years to come. The art and flags will remain the property of the festival.

Arts and Craft Guild Gallery
The Arts and Craft Guild of Haines Junction is pleased to announce that the gallery is open 7 days a week from noon until 4pm. An incredible place to meet and purchase local art. You’ll find small art quilts, lino prints, cards, sewing, jewellery, nuno felting, original paintings, photography, books from local authors, limited edition prints, beadwork, collage work, handmade journals and more. An Atlin Arts and Music Festival Headliner!
For those who can't make the AAMF, we're bringing a little bit of the festival to you!

Live Music at the Village Bakery
THIS FRIDAY AT THE BAKERY – July 12 – Steve Slade
 
Steve has decades of teaching, composing and giggling under his belt (size 42.) He hitched up the narrow, gravel Alaska Highway in ’79 with a backpack, a guitar and ‘Alias’ the dog. He liked what he saw, so he stuck around. He now travels with ‘Juno’ (the black and tan dog), several guitars, a ukulele, LOTS of harmonicas and a beat up silver Dodge Van. A voice described as “Klondyke soul,” quite a few tasty harmonica licks, solid guitar backup and LOTS of stories, recitations and tall tales make for an enjoyable evening of entertainment.
 
Dinner includes BBQ local wild salmon fillet, plenty of sides, breads, coffee & tea and a delicious dessert for all ages. Music is free. Dinner is $35 and is served from 6-7pm. The music is from 7-9pm. Reservations are recommended.
