Dákų̀ nän tsʼeddhyèt Dance Festival The Dákų̀ nän tsʼeddhyèt dance festival is happening here in Dakwakada/Haines Junction June 13-16, 2019 at Dákų̀ culture centre. The festival takes place every other year and is an incredible coming together of dance, singing and drumming. It’s free! The performances is free! The food is free! It’s a great family event! It’s a great place to connect with friends old and new! It’s a celebration of Indigenous song and dance! There will be a wide range of crafts and workshops! It’s a wonderful reason to visit Dakwakada/Haines Junction and Kluane National Park! There are over 15 performers and groups coming to perform from across the north – NWT, Yukon and Alaska. The third annual Augusto! Children’s Festival, Yukon's first dedicated art and music festival for children, will take place from August 9th to 11th, 2019 at the St. Elias Convention Centre. Our local Dakwäkäda Dancers will open the festival at 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon followed by Soir de Semaine for the Friday night family dance, with their special blend of Franco-rock, ska, reggae, folk and funk. With their colourful costumes, painted faces and highly interactive French music, they promise to be a great start to the weekend! During the day Saturday and half day Sunday, 29 one hour workshops will be offered where children aged 5 to 12 will have the opportunity to work with professional artists, and try their hand at several different visual art and performing art activities. Workshops will include Stage Skills, West African Dance, Physical Activity & Games, Music Exploration, Squeakers & Kazoos, Southern Tutchone Song & Dance, Polymer Clay Doggie Zipper Pulls, Mono Printing with Acrylic Paint, Wire Sculpture Creatures, Needle Felting, Colourful Paper Long Tailed Creatures, Fur & Feather Creations, Mad Hatters, Clay Story Buckets and Treasure Chests, Electronics and Storytelling. In tandem with the workshop hours, Toddler Town will be a mini festival for ages 4 and under. Located in the arena mezzanine, this younger set can take part in craft activities, storybook corners, colouring craft sessions and mini concerts every half hour, or in spare moments, the amazing cardboard village provides several colourful structures to explore. All ages will come together for our feature performance on Saturday night – a one hour mix of comedy and circus with the Kamikaze Fireflies www.kamikazefireflies.ca As an opening act for this festival highlight, West African Fana Soro will share traditional music and drumming from the Ivory Coast. Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay Association The Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay is on Saturday, June 15 heading south from Haines Junction on the Haines Hwy. The road is closed southbound from 8:15-9:15 at Haines Jtn for 4 km. There is single lane traffic control at the Kathleen Lake Lookout and St Elias Lake Trailhead. Arts and Culture Arts and Craft Guild Gallery The Arts and Craft Guild of Haines Junction is pleased to announce that the gallery opened on June 7 and is open 7 days a week from noon until 4pm. An incredible place to meet and purchase local art. Haines Junction Public Library The author Richard Van Camp (The Lesser Blessed) will be coming to do a reading at the Atrium of the Convention Centre on June 17 at 7pm. Doors open at 6:30. This is the day before the bike relay and we're usually pretty packed that night so reservations for the dinner are encouraged.
