Drop-in Badminton Adult and Teen Badminton starts at the school on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 pm. It's open to everyone from beginners to experts and everything is provided - even lots of laughs! Thanks to the St. Elias Community School for giving the community the chance to dance on our feet, swing our arms and smash some birdies! Drop-in Basketball Thursdays and Saturdays from 7-9PM at the St. Elias Community School gym, co-ed, 13+ unless accompanied. Drop-in Yoga Yoga is every Monday, starting at 5:15 at Yukon College. Free. Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay The AGM for the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relays is on Tuesday, October 9th at 7PM in the boardroom of Sport Yukon at 4061 4th Avenue in Whitehorse. Haines Junction Minor Hockey Haines Junction Minor Hockey’s annual Registration evening/gear swap was held October 4, 2018 for the upcoming season. While parents registered their players, they and their players also enjoyed a chili dinner & dessert put on by parent volunteers. The arena was open for a free public skate to all players /parents who wished to take part. 53 players from Mites & Tykes to adult Female were registered that evening. Those that missed the event can still register at the time of their first practice. Thanks to the diligence of arena staff and no ice making glitches this year, the arena is now open! It is the earliest it has been open for several years. The arena has been painted & spruced up and never looked better! Minor Hockey starts TODAY and will continue until March break with a short break at Christmas. We are looking forward to a busy and successful season ahead! Register by October 10 and the weekend costs $45. Include the Saturday advanced session for an additional $15. After October 10, 3 sessions costs $54 and the advanced session is $18. Marnie is Doctor of Physical Therapy, certified strength and conditioning specialist and 300+ hr registered yoga teacher. She owns and operates BodyiQ Physical Therapy and Yoga in Haines, Alaska. Marnie has completed 200-hour training with Yoga Medicine, with who she continues to study and act as a contributing educator. She completed 100-hr intensive immersion in Karnataka in India in 2017 and she is currently writing a book on combining the science of persistent pain and yoga as medicine. Through this retreat, Marnie’s aim is for each student to grow stable roots in themselves to strand strong physically, emotionally and spiritually. Kids are moving, wiggling and having fun every Tuesday and Thursday until December 20th, 10am -11:30am, at the Haines Junction Hockey Arena mezzanine. Healthy snack for the kids and coffee for the parents provided. Please wear comfortable clothes and indoor shoes. Parent or caregiver participation is required. Our programs this fall include Dance & Movement, Boogie, Stomp & Clap music program, Wiggle, Giggle & Move activity program and a Parent & Tot Yoga program. Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Chief’s Town Hall Chief Smith invites CAFN citizens for a conversation to talk about where the CAFN government is heading in the months and years to come. Locally, the town hall will be at the Da Kų Cultural Centre in Dakwäkäda (Haines Junction) on Wednesday, October 10 from 6PM to 8PM. Refreshments and snacks will be served. There are also Chief’s Town Halls scheduled for Whitehorse at the Yukon Inn on, Tuesday, October 9th (tonight) starting at 6PM, in Takhini on Thursday, October 11 starting 6PM and Champagne on Sunday, October 14 starting at 1PM. CAFN Election CAFN is in election mode, with Chief Smith recently acclaimed to the position for a second term. Jessica-April Mazur was also acclaimed to the position of Youth Councillor. There are 2 candidates vying for Elder Councillor, incumbent Carol (Hume) Buzzell and Mundy Joe. There are 9 candidates for Councillor: Barbara Joe, Clint McCuaig, Doris Anderson, Steve Allen, Marie McLaren, Sophie K Green, Britteny I-R Johnson, and incumbents, Kathleen VanBibber and Rose Kushniruk. Tiny Homes Ground Breaking Join community members and the Dän Ts’änānän program on Friday, October 12 at 12:30pm at the far end of Joe Street, in Dakwäkäda (Haines Junction) for the ground breaking celebration for the construction of 10 tiny homes. There will be cake! CAFN Cedar Hat Workshop Join the CAFN Heritage team on October 12, 13, 19, 20 and 21 from 9AM to 5PM at Da Kų Cultural Centre for a cedar hat making workshop. There are 15 spots available for CAFN citizens, so sign-up today to reserve your spot. There is a $75 fee to cover the cost of materials. If you bring your own cedar there is no charge. Community Outreach Revenue Canada will be at Dá Kų on October 22. They will be able to help with assessment papers and T4s for people who have not filed in years and other programming information. Village of Haines Junction Municipal Election Advance Poll is Thursday, October 11 and election day is Thursday, October 18. Polls are open on both days from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. We have a new mayor in Haines Junction. Thomas Eckervogt has served on Council for about a term and half and has been acclaimed as mayor. We have 6 candidates vying for 4 council positions: Susan Smith, John Farynowski, Mark Nassiopoulos, Elodie Dulac, Kari Johnston and Courtney Quinn. There is an all candidates forum scheduled for tonight, Tuesday, October 9, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the St. Elias Convention Centre. Arts and Culture Junction Artist in Residence The Junction Artist in Residence Program presents the JAR 2018 Fashion Show on Saturday, October 13th at the St. Elias Convention Centre. The event starts at 6:00 pm with a community potluck, performance and presentation at 7:30pm, and the fashion show begins at 8:30pm. The event is free and a great opportunity to see what designer Henry Navarro has been inspired to create over the summer residency in Haines Junction. The show is on October 19, doors open at 7PM and the show starts at 7:30PM. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and youth. Tickets are available at the door. Writing Group Local author, Allison Martin, has started a local writing group. The group meets the first Saturday of each month, the next meeting is November 3. It’s a drop-in, casual group for anyone interested in working on their words. The group meets at the Haines Junction Library on the first Saturday of each month from 10am to 2pm. Yukon College Conscious Aging: Aging with Passion and Purpose The Northern Institute of Social Justice presents Conscious Aging: Aging with Passion and Purpose. What can aging with passion and purpose look like in your 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s? This retreat introduces you to conscious aging and the inner work that is important on this path. Topics include:
